The Study

The primary goal of this research is to learn more about the personal, emotional and psychological impact on those who have experienced cyberbullying firsthand. My hope is that research of this kind will give more insight into an issue which has largely been neglected in the South African context.

My name is Christopher Kemp, I am currently working as an Intern Psychologist and completing my Masters degree in Clinical Psychology. This research project forms part of the requirement for the completion of that degree, although the topic choice is my own.

This is a small scale study, which means I will only be using around six participants. The study will be qualitative in nature - that means instead of filling out forms or ticking boxes, I'll be asking you to have a conversation with me about your experience of being cyberbullied - your anonymity will be ensured (more details on that can be found on the Informed Consent page). For convenience sake, and to ensure location is not a problem, these interviews will be conducted over Skype.

The choice of a qualitative research paradigm is purposeful - what little research that has been done on Cyberbullying in a South African context has mostly been quantitative, i.e. statistics based. For my research, I'm attempting to investigate the personal and subjective experience of being cyberbullied - I'd like to know what the personal impact is, in the participant's own words.

I understand that the subject matter is sensitive, and for many of those who have experienced cyberbullying it may be difficult to talk about, which is why maintaining anonymity is so important. A debriefing session will be available with a trained Clinical Psychologist to all participants who feel they need it. This will of course be at no charge to the participant.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, if you're willing to take part in the study please head over to the Details and Contact page to get in touch.
